To put it simply, otoplasty is plastic surgery of the ears. It may be done to correct malformations of the outer ear caused by injury or birth defects. During otoplasty, the plastic surgeon may alter the size, shape or position of the outer ear. Otoplasty may be done on one or both ears.
What Does the Procedure Involve?
Otoplasty is a procedure that is performed in an outpatient setting. Children undergoing the procedure may be given general anesthesia to ensure they don’t move; adults may be given local or general anesthesia. The surgery may take two or three hours. If the patient is undergoing a particularly complicated procedure, it may take longer. After the surgery, the patient is encouraged to carefully follow all of the post-op instructions.
What Is Ear Pinning?
Ear pinning is a common procedure that may be done to correct protruding ears. The surgeon may remove skin and cartilage behind the ears and then reposition the patient’s ears. The procedure may take one or two hours.
What Is Cauliflower Ear?
Cauliflower ear, also called “wrestler’s ear” or “boxer’s ear,” is a deformity that is usually caused by a blow or repeated blows to the ear. If the injury is not treated, it may cause hematomas that clot and block the blood flow. The injury may also pull the skin from the cartilage underneath. In both cases, the injury can disrupt the connection between the skin and the cartilage. As the cartilage shrivels and dies, it also folds in on itself, creating the characteristic deformity. Scar tissue may form and make the ear look swollen.
Other Common Conditions That May Benefit from Otoplasty
Often times, people are born with naturally asymmetrical ears. This may cause a person a lot of embarrassment, especially in their school years. Other ears have simply developed excess cartilage over time. In the birth defect cryptotia, the upper part of the ear is partly buried under the skin. Microtia is a birth defect in which the outer ear is abnormally small or under-developed. It can range in severity from slightly undersized to completely absent (anotia). All of these conditions may be able to be corrected through a simple otoplasty procedure.
