Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition most people have heard of. Unfortunately, outside of knowing that it may be caused by long bouts of repetitive motions, most people have no idea what it really is. There are myths surrounding the syndrome that may prevent you from seeking proper care. At REAL Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery, we want to dispel the myths about the condition to help you decide if hand release surgery may be right for you.
Myth #1: Hand Tingling is Carpal Tunnel
Carpal tunnel is caused when there is compression of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel. The symptoms are normally tingling, numbness, and a general feeling of discomfort. However, experiencing those symptoms does not necessarily mean you have the condition. There are specific signs that separate the symptoms of carpal tunnel from other conditions. The tingling tends to be isolated to the thumb, index, and middle fingers. Other digits are rarely affected. Also, aches are generally more pronounced at night.
Myth #2: Only Factory Workers Get It
It is true that extended hours doing repetitive motions can contribute to higher risk of getting the condition. However, there is no clinical evidence that work-related factors cause the condition.
Myth #3: Relief Only Comes After Surgery
If you suffer from carpal tunnel, surgery may not be your only option. You may postpone the need for surgery and get some relief through certain methods. That said, if there is muscle wasting or concern about permanent damage to the median nerve, our doctor may advise surgery.
Myth #4: Surgery Often Does Not Work
Carpal tunnel hand release surgery has a clinical success rate of between 75 and 90 percent. It is followed by several weeks of physical therapy.
Myth #5: Surgery Means Extensive Time Off Work
There is no need to risk your health by avoiding treatment. About a week after surgery, or when your bandage is removed, you may be able to perform modified duties.
Myth #6: It Won’t Happen to Me
Unfortunately, carpal tunnel may happen to anyone.
