Abdominoplasty is also called a tummy tuck and it is major surgery that tightens the muscles and skin in your abdomen. After you have finished childbearing, a tummy tuck can help give you back your pre-pregnancy figure. The effect pregnancy has on your body may not be easy or possible to reverse through diet and exercise. Abdominoplasty is a long-lasting solution so you look better in clothing and a swimsuit.
What Is Abdominoplasty?
We offer several different types of abdominoplasty. When you visit Dr. Stephen Salerno you can discuss the best course for you. The main types of tummy tuck are:
A full tummy tuck tightens the abdomen above the navel and below the navel. The loose skin is pulled back and the abdominal muscles are tightened. The skin is replaced and the excess is removed along with some stretch marks. The benefits of a full abdominoplasty is a smoother, flatter abdomen and fewer stretch marks.
A mini-tummy tuck is only for the area below the navel. It has a smaller incision than a full abdominoplasty and may be recommended for women who have a small belly and not much stretched skin. This may be enough if you have had only one child, but if you have had several children a full tummy tuck may be your best option to get the results you want.
Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that may be done in conjunction with a tummy tuck to remove stubborn fat pockets. You can discuss your options in further detail at your consultation with Mr. Salerno.
What to Expect?
You may be asked to wait for six months after delivery before having an abdominoplasty. This gives your body enough time to fully recover from childbearing. During that time you can exercise enough so you don’t gain back too much weight.
Before the surgery, it is a good idea to be done having children. The results from your tummy tuck may disappear if you get pregnant again.
You may stay in the hospital or our clinic overnight after an extensive tummy tuck so we can monitor your recovery process during the first few hours. You may need help at home for a few days especially if you have young children as you may not be able to lift anything that weighs more than 10 pounds for at least a week.
Abdominoplasty tightens and flattens your abdomen permanently after pregnancy. For many women, no amount of exercise can get their abdomen as flat or firm.
